  • Education
  • May 5, 2026
Group Study

Due to its high-quality education system, emphasis on applied learning, and connections to global industries, Finland is considered an optimal destination for international students. If you are thinking of studying in Finland, you need to be familiar with the intakes, available courses, and how long they last.

Finland Academic Intakes for International Students

Two General Intakes

1. Autumn Intake (Main Intake)

·         Application Time: November – May.

·         Classes Begin: August/September.

·         Most Bachelor’s & Master’s programs are offered.

·         Highest admission opportunities.

Accepted Application Types:

✔️ Joint Application (Primary & most common)

✔️ Direct Application (for selected universities/programs)

❌ Rolling Application (rare, limited cases)

2. Spring Intake (Limited Intake)

·         Application Period: May – September.

·         Classes Start: January.

·         Fewer programs available.

Accepted Application Types:

✔️ Direct Application (most common for Spring)

✔️ Rolling Application (offered by some Universities of Applied Sciences)

❌ Joint Application (usually NOT available for Spring intake)

📝 Application Types Explained

🔹 Joint Application

One single system for applying to multiple programs. Fixed deadlines (mostly Autumn intake deadlines). Competitive but more choices.

🔹 Direct Application

Go to individual universities' websites. Flexible deadlines by institution. Popular for Autumn & Spring (especially Master’s).

🔹 Rolling Application

Apply whenever seats are available. Quicker decisions (first-come, first-served). Available mostly in Spring or for specific programs.

Quick Summary:

Autumn intake = Joint + Direct (+ limited Rolling)

Spring intake = Direct + Rolling (No Joint in most cases).

Available Programs in Finland

  • Foundation Programs — These, like a Bachelor's Degree, are designed for students who don't meet actual direct admission requirements. They focus on improving knowledge, English, and provide a route to a degree.

  • Bachelor’s Degree (UG):
  • Duration: 3 – 4 years
  • Credits: Approximately 180–240 ECTS
  • Popular Fields Include:
    • Business
    • IT
    • Engineering
    • Nursing

For instance, Bachelor’s programs in nursing generally take approximately 3.5 years (210 ECTS).

  • Postgraduate Diploma (PGD):
    — Short-term specializations in a subject, typically 1 – 2 years, that target career readiness and skills building.

  • Master’s Degree (PG):
  • Duration: 1 – 2 years
  • Credits: Somewhere around 60–120 ECTS
  • Applicants will need a bachelor’s degree, as per your submission.

This is how Finland has become a top nursing school in the world. The strong demand for nursing professionals and qualifications recognized by the EU makes it a destination for those studying in Finland. The time frame is approximately 3.5 years to become eligible within the European Union to work as a Registered Nurse.

  • Nursing Top-Up Programs:
Ideal for people who have a nursing degree or diploma. These include programs ranging from 1.5 to 2 years long and translate prior education into an EU nursing degree, among others:
  • Clinical practice
  • Finnish language training
  • Practical hospital experience

For instance, Top-Up Nursing can commence at Spring or Autumn intakes at many colleges.
